In librum destructio destrutionum Averroys

Folio (311x212 mm). 130 leaves. Signatures: a-p8q10. Fingerprint: i.di e.*. o-s. Adpi. Text printed in two columns. Scoto's device on last leaf verso underneath the Registrum. 17th-century stiff vellum, ink title along the spine, later morocco label at the bottom of the spine with the gilt shelf mark “SC.21.D.42” covering a previous manuscript shelf mark only partially readable, original flyleaves preserved (minor losses to the spine, back panel a bit worn). On the title page contemporary ownership's inscription “Eustasij pauli tellini [?] di mathera sum liber”. The volume has been annotated throughout by three different hands. The notes supplied in the margins and on the final leaf by the two earlier hands have been partially cut off when the book was rebound in the 17th century. The notes of the third hand are intact, so they must have been supplied after the book was rebound. Round wormhole in the upper outer corner of the first 30 leaves not affecting the text, some foxing and staining, worm track in upper inner corner affecting some leaves at the center of the volume with no loss of text. All in all a very good, genuine copy.

The first edition of this commentary, which includes the text of Averroes' Tahafut al-tahafut in Latin translation, was printed at Venice by Bonetus Locatellus for Octavianus Scotus on March 1, 1497. That edition is sometimes found with Aristoteles' Opera (GW 2340), with a general title for both works.

For the present undated edition (presumably the second) the imprint information is inferred from the printer's device, as there is no other colophon information. IGI dates it to after 1500, Sheppard about 1500, Edit 16 and USTC between 1500 and 1509, and the Italian National Union Catalogue to 1508.

As stated on verso of l. 123 (f. q3v), the commentary was begun in 1494 and completed on January 22, 1497. The first 1497 edition is also the editio princeps of Averroes' text.
