Second edition (the first was issued in 1881) of this grammar and dictionary of Fula language with a map of Sudan that shows where it is spoken. This pioneering work served as an indispensable communication tool for travelers and soldiers passing through Western Sudan.

Louis Faidherbe was a general, a colonial administrator, primarily in Algeria and Senegal, and a French politician, recipient of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor and the Military Medal. He also commanded the Army of the North during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
