FIFTH EDITION of the first and second volumes and FIRST EDITION of the third and fourth volumes of Pietro Bembo's vernacular letters.

In 1532 Bembo begun to collect and organize his correspondence, both Latin and Italian, for publication. He decided approximately to divide the Italian letters into two major categories: those addressed to men (arranged according Venetian and not Venetian) and those addressed to women. To his Latin epistolary (Epistolae familiares) he added the letters (also called Brevi) which he had wrote as secretary to Pope Leo X.

The first collection to see the light was precisely the Petri Bembi Epistolarum Leonis Decimi Pontifici Max. nomine scriptarum libri sexdecim (Venice, 1535, see pp. xxx), which also remained the only edition of Bembo's letters published during his lifetime. In 1539, after his appointment as a cardinal, he abandoned the project to publish his correspondence, even though he continued to revise and correct the minutes until the end of his days. The prestige of his new position and the change in the Italian religious and political climate restrained him from divulging his private letters. For this reason he was very displeased seeing many of his youthful love letters published without his permission in the epistolaries issued by Paolo Manuzio (1541) and Paolo Gherardo (1544).

After Bembo's death, Carlo Gualteruzzi, one of his two literary executors (the other one was Girolamo Quirino), took up the task of publishing Bembo's letters as faithful as possible to the will of the author. In 1548 Gualteruzzi obtained a fifteen-years privilege for ‘li quattro volumi di Lettere volgari'. In the same year he issued the first volume (Rome, Dorico), but, while respecting the general plan of the author, introduced many arbitrary changes. Bembo, Lettere. Edizione critica”, Bologna, 1987, I, pp. IX-X).

When the first volume of Bembo's Italian letters was reprinted by Gualtiero Scotto in 1552 (for the first time together with the other three volumes of letters), many other changes (mainly omissions, additions, and transpositions) were made, especially for political or religious reasons.

Before Scotto's first complete four volume edition of Bembo's vernacular letters came out in 1552, a second volume had already appeared in an edition issued by Antonio Manuzio in 1550 under Gualteruzzi's supervision. This edition was reissued in 1551 by Scotto, who put his device on title-page, but maintained in the colophon Manuzio's name. For this reason in Scotto's four volume edition of 1552 the first two volumes bear the inscription “Seconda impressione”.

In 1552 Scotto also published the ‘editio princeps' of Bembo's Epistolarum familiarum libri VI. In 1564 (Venice, Rampazetto) a kind of fifth book was eventually added, when Bembo's nephew Giovanni Matteo had the idea to divulge the letters addressed to him by his famous uncle for personal promotion.

Scotto's 1575-edition (of which the first two volumes of the present set is composed) is an exact reprint of that of 1552 to which is added the Bembo's biography that Sansovino wrote for his 1560-edition of Bembo's letters.

The first volume is divided into twelve books and arranged hierarchically. It contains the letters addressed by Bembo to popes, cardinals, bishops, protonotaries and priests. In the first Roman edition, dedicated by the printers Dorico to Guido Ascanio Sforza (Roma, September 1, 1548), there are overall 230 letters. The 1552-Scotto's edition, while retaining the original dedication, presents many modifications. Répertoire chronologique et analytique, Roma & Nancy, 1990, I, p. 133).

The second volume, also divided into twelve books, counts 275 letters. It still bears Antonio Manuzio's undated dedication to Girolamo Quirino and is identical to the first 1550 edition. It contains letters addressed to Bembo's Venetian friends and acquaintances. The letters are grouped by recipients and then, within each group, are arranged chronologically over a period of about fifty years, from August 5, 1497 to August 20, 1546.

The third volume, despite its second title (Lettere di M. Pietro Bembo a Principi et Signori et suoi famigliari amici scritte divise in dodici libri), has only eleven books containing a total of 341 letters, which are arranged chronologically over a period of about forty years, from August 3, 1503 to October 8, 1546. It is dedicated by Gualtero Scotto to cardinal Giulio della Rovere (Venezia, March 12, 1552).

The fourth and final volume, dedicated by Scotto to Lisabetta Quirino (Venezia, March 15, 1552), “comprend 196 [recte 192] lettres divisées en 2 parties.

Pietro Bembo, born in Venice to a patrician family, received a humanistic education in Florence, Rome, Bergamo and Messina (1492-1494), where he studied under the Greek scholar Constantine Lascaris. In 1496 he published his first work, the Latin dialogue De Aetna. Unsuitable for the political career to which he was destined, he decided to devote himself to literary pursuits. Between 1495 and 1500, while studying philosophy at the University of Padua and attending the courses of Niccolò Leoniceno in Ferrara, he wrote a dialogue on love, Gli Asolani (1505), inspired by his relationship with Maria Savorgnan. In the following years he began composing his major work, Le prose della volgar lingua, which underwent many changes and corrections before it was published for the first time in 1525. Thanks to its huge success (from the expiry of the privilege until the end of the century it appeared in over twenty editions), Le Prose became the model writing manual in the vernacular and imposed the Italian vernacular literature to the attention of the humanists. In 1501 and 1502 he also prepared milestone editions of Petrarch and Dante for Aldo Manuzio's printing house, giving birth to vernacular philology.

Before leaving Ferrara for Venice in 1504, Bembo had a love affair with Alfonso I d'Este's wife, Lucrezia Borgia, to whom he dedicated the first edition of Gli Asolani. In 1506 he moved to Urbino, where he pursued his literary interests and met the playwright and cardinal Bernardo Dovizi da Bibbiena, who soon became his closest friend. In 1513 he wrote De imitatione, a treatise on Ciceronian Latin, and, together with his friend Jacopo Sadoleto, he was appointed by Pope Leo X as secretary of papal briefs in Latin. In 1519, disappointed in his expectations of an ecclesiastical career, he left Rome and retired to his villa in Padua.

From 1519 to 1539 Bembo lived mostly in Padua and Venice, attending to the publications of Le Prose and of his Rime (1530), intended to provide an authoritative example of the principles he had previously theorized. In 1529 he was appointed historian of the Republic of Venice (his Historia Veneta was published posthumously both in Latin and Italian in 1551-1552), and librarian of the Biblioteca Nicena (today Marciana).

In 1539 Pope Paul III ordained him a priest and named him cardinal. He spent the last years of his life either in Rome or in his bishoprics, Gubbio (1541) and Bergamo (1544) (cf. C. Kidwell, Pietro Bembo: lover, linguist, cardinal, Montreal, 2004, passim).
