(I:) Second edition; (II:) Third edition; (III:) FIRST EDITION. Book I of Lettere di Principi, edited by Girolamo Ruscelli, was first printed at Venice by Ziletti in 1562. It was dedicated by the editor to Cardinal Carlo Borromeo from Venice, on December 15, 1561. In the present second edition, containing 197 letters, Ruscelli's name was removed from the title-page, but his dedication to Cardinal Borromeo was retained.

Before the dedication is a preface to the reader by the printer Giordano Ziletti, in which he justifies his intentions: “Io, che con ogni opera et diligenza mia mi son sempre sforzato di giovar' al mondo nella mia professione, mi son molto rallegrato, vedendo, che questo mio Primo Libro di lettere di Principi è stato gratissimo ad ogni sorta di gente, sì per la dignità di coloro, che le scrivono, sì per il modo, che tengono i personaggi à scriver fra loro, & sì ancora principalme(n)te per la cognition delle istorie, che si trovano in esso molto peraventura, più vere, & più chiare, che non sono nel Giovio, nel Guicciardino, & in altri molti scrittori de nostri tempi, per essersi queste lettere avute la maggior parte le proprie, & vere originali, senz'alcuna fraude, ò mutatione de gli appassionati, ò mal'informati, come accade le più volte a chi scrive per sola relation d'altri”. He then mentions his plans for two other volumes and goes on: “Essendomi da ogni parte per lettere, & à bocca richiesti di questi Primi volumi, che già son finiti di distribuir tutti, mi è convenuto rimetterlo à stampar di nuovo.

Nevertheless in this second edition two new letters were added, the notes to various letters augmented, and some changes were also made in the chronology. This edition was translated into French by François de Belleforest (1572).

Book II was published after Ruscelli's death and edited by Giordano Ziletti in 1575 with a dedication to Philip Emanuel of Savoy dated from Venice, November 22. The present third edition of 1581 printed by Francesco Ziletti, Giordano's nephew, is an exact reprint of the first. Book III has a dedication by Giordano Ziletti to the lawyer Alvise Michiel dated from Venice, October 10, 1577.

Girolamo Ruscelli, of humble origins, was born in Viterbo and became one of the leading editors of the Cinquecento. He was first active in Rome, where he founded the Accademia dello Sdegno, and later settled in Venice working for such publishers as Sessa and Valgrisi. He was a friend of Bernardo and Torquato Tasso, Lodovico Dolce and Pietro Aretino, the last two were to become his rivals in several bitter controversies (cf. P. Trovato, Con ogni diligenza corretto: la stampa e le revisioni editoriali dei testi letterari italiani (1470-1570), Bologna, 1991, pp. 241-298; and B. Richardson, Print Culture in Renaissance Italy. The Editor and the Vernacular Text, 1470-1600, Cambridge, 1994, passim and p. 109).

Giordano Ziletti (fl. 1549-1583) from Brescia was printer, editor and bookseller in Venice, where he published over a hundred books. He was arrested several times by the Inquisition for having sold heretical books, but always released, having obtained a license to sell prohibited works to the participants of the Council of Trent. His publishing house, Al Segno della Stella, had as device a comet surrounded by stars with the motto “Inter omnes” (cf. F. Ascarelli & M. Menato, La tipografia del Cinquecento in Italia, Firenze, 1989, pp. 389-390).
