Les oeuvres

Three parts in one volume, 12mo (134x74 mm). 347, [7] pp.; 469, [9] pp.; 166, [32] pp. Collation: A-Z12 Aa-Vv12. Lacking the last blank leaf Vv12. Woodcut showing the ‘Dive Bouteille' at l. Tt3r. 19th-century French red morocco, panels within a double gilt fillet, richly gilt spine, marbled endleaves, gilt edges (Masson-De Bonnelle). Stamp with the initials “SG” intertwined on title-page verso. On the back flyleaf is the note in pencil: “Salle Drouot Giraud-Badin 11 juin 1957 Frs. 103,000.” A very good copy.

RARE EDITION surely published after 1584, when the final appendices (Epistres à deux vieilles by François Habert) to Rabelais' collected work were first added. The printing date is therefore a misprint and was perhaps intended to be 1585; however, the edition could also be from slightly later, perhaps after 1601, even though typographically it looks like a 16th-century book. The present copy inaugurates the series of editions bearing Jean Martin as the imaginary printer.
