FIRST EDITION of “the most important contributions to the physiology of digestion after René Réamur […] [Spallanzani] discovered the action of saliva on foodstuff, verified Réamur's observations on the digestive powers of gastric juice, proving, in addition, that it prevented putrefaction, and carried out a large number of experiments upon himself “(J.F. Fulton, Selected readings in the history of physiology, Springfield IL, 1966, pp. 176-178).

Volume two contains a treatise on the generation of amphibians, a dissertation on artificial fertilization in animals (Spallanzani was the first scientist to deal with artificial fertilization in an article appeared in “Prodromo della nuova Enciclopedia Italiana” in 1779), two letters to Ch. Bonnet, and a dissertation on the generation of different plants.

Spallanzani was one of the greatest experimenters of his time; he dealt mainly with biology and microscopic investigations on animals and plants, but he also showed great skills in other fields, such as chemistry, physics, meteorology, mineralogy, and volcanology, as demonstrated by the six volumes of his Viaggi alle due Sicilie e in alcune parti dell'Appennino (Pavia, 1792-‘97). His works had a profound influence and were translated into all the main European languages (cf. E. Capanna, Lazzaro Spallanzani: At the roots of modern biology, in: “Journal of Experimental Zoology”, v. 285, no. 3, 15 October 1999, pp. 178-196).
