Engraved frontispiece, [8], 184 pp. The frontispiece depicts a chicken coop with roosters and hens pecking at each other, a lion and an owl on a tree blowing a long trumpet from which the motto “Ils s'organisent” comes out. Contemporary half vellum, lettering piece on spine, sprinkled edges. Some foxing and browning, but a very good copy.

First edition printed in Florence to be distinguished from the contemporary counterfeit printed in Turin, which has exactly the same number of pages, on the basis of some details in the frontispiece (whose impression is also stronger in the original edition), of the numbers of lines in the last two pages (respectively 35 and 32 in the original, 38 and 28 in the counterfeit), and of a few other small differences, like the note 76, at p. 172, which is complete in the original, while it is cut and ends with dots in the counterfeit. The edition contains 63 epigrams, 46 sonnets, an ode and 5 prose pieces composed by the author between 1790 and 1798, which constitute a violent attack against the ‘Gauls' accused by Alfieri of having betrayed the ideals of freedom of the Revolution.
