Folio (326x145 mm). [52] leaves (including the first blank and the title page) printed on recto only and a folding table at the end (Albero genealogico dei Reali di Savoia Marchesi d'Italia, ‘Family Tree of the Royal House of Savoy, Marquises of Italy'). Title and text printed in multiple colors within various typographic frames, also printed in color. Nice publisher's binding in gilt red cloth with title (Saggio di lavori tipografici dello stabilimento militare di pene in Savona, ‘Sample of typographic works from the military penal establishment in Savona') lettered in gold on the front cover, marbled endpapers and edges (some foxing, slightly worn and rubbed). Minimal scattered foxing, small tear to the table.
This apparently unrecorded edition was printed by the Typography of the Military Prison in Savona and presented at the 1878 Paris World's Fair. The Priamar fortress in Savona was used as a military prison from 1849 until 1901, when this function was transferred to Gaeta. The Tipografia del Reclusorio Militare di Savona is known for having printed official documents for the Military District Command between approximately 1878 and 1890. The preliminary note states that of the approximately 480 inmates in the prison, 170 were employed in the printing shop (the remainder were employed as weavers, mechanics, tailors, carpenters, milkmen, mattress makers, and shoemakers); that the prison derived significant economic benefits from operating the printing shop, as well as the “moral reform of the convicts”; and that the printing house was equipped with 15 machines, 20 printing presses, 8 presses (including one hydraulic), 2 paper-cutting machines, one perforating machine, and 8 bookbinding presses. The work contains excerpts from Luigi Cibrario's Brevi cenni storici e genealogici dei Reali di Savoia (‘Brief Historical and Genealogical Notes on the Royal House of Savoy').
