Malaspina, born in Parma to humble origins, worked as a customs porter in his hometown during his youth. His brilliant intellect and precocious love of learning brought him to the attention of Pietro Giordani, who took him under his wing along with other scholars such as Pezzana, who helped secure his appointment as custodian of the municipal library. The most substantial fruit of his research is this dictionary, but he was also the author of various guides and historical works related to his city.
Italian Union Catalogue, IT\ICCU\PAL\0066384; Lozzi, II, 3556; Prati, 355 ("Opera di grande importanza, con abbondanti articoli metodici”).
