Girolamo Baruffaldi was born in Ferrara in 1675 to Nicolò and Caterina Campi. His father was an antiquarian and a scholar of Ferrara's history. He was ordained priest in 1700, but he always maintained a passion for archaeology, historical research, and poetry. The work for which he is best known today is his research on the history of Ferrara. Among his major works are a Storia di Ferrara, the Commentario storico-erudito, and the Vite dei pittori e scultori ferraresi. He was also one of the most skilled poets of his time. He died in 1755.
