THE THERMAL BATHS OF LESIGNANO

4to (201x144 mm). [16], 102, [2 blank] pp. Collation: *-**4 A-N4. Leaf N4 is a blank. Printer's device on title page. Woodcut initials and headpieces. Modern half vellum with lettering piece on spine. Some browning and foxing, but a good copy.

Rare first edition of this early work on the healing waters of Lesignano near Parma and the local  mud springs called “barboj” from the mumbling caused by the emission of methane gas from the underground through small volcanoes; these geologic manifestations result in salty mud escaping to the surface and flowing into the small Barboj stream, a tributary of the Termina torrent. Zunti attributes the therapeutic efficacy of these thermal muds to their bituminous components. At the end (pp. 99-102) is included a previously unpublished short text by Gabriele Falloppio, entitles Responsio de obstructionibus ingentibus circa mesenterium, a materia varia factis ... doctori Philippo Banzollae Parmensi […] Gabrielis Falloppij nunc primum edita a Hieronymo Zunthio.
