This third edition of Leopold Mozart's ‘Violin School' is the last and final version of the work published during the author's lifetime. The first edition of this pioneering work on violin teaching had appeared in Augsburg in 1756, the birth year of his son Wolfgang Amadeus. Leopold was ‘Vicekapellmeister' at the archiepiscopal court in Salzburg. His Violinschule, considered as the first of its genre, was frequently reprinted and translated into several languages. The engraved frontispiece shows Leopold playing the violin, the three other plates show examples of correct and incorrect posture of the body and hands when playing the violin.

Eitner, VII, 90; Wolfheim, I, 862.
