Oblong folio (291x428 mm). Title page and 12 coloured lithographed plates with interleaves (Montaut pinx-Aubert & Cie. imp.). Original cloth with blind-stamped arabesque panels, gilt title within gilt cartouche on front panel, gilt centerpiece on back panel, gilt edges, yellow endleaves (spine skillfully repaired). A very good copy.

FIRST EDITION, colored issue, printed by the renowned Parisian printmaking house Aubert & Cie., which also issued the companion volume Defauts et Vices. The plates show children in costumes of the Ancien Régime staging, with comic effect, various adult virtues: 1. Humanité – Générosité, 2. Etude – Talente, 3. Politesse – Amabilité, 4. Henri de Montaut was a caricaturist and an illustrator who was responsible, along with other artists, for illustrating the novels of Jules Verne. He also contributed his vignettes to many journals of the time, including the Journal amusant, the Journal pour rire, and La Vie parisienne.
